I stretched the strand over the reticle, and it gave a medium crosshair that is still in service. I ended up using some strands of elastic material from a set of fine, light dress socks.
I think that is the ticket for most that want to try such themselves. One sees some sales of tungsten wire on Ebay made for fine and medium crosshairs. I thought I would be smart and use a strand of human hair, the result was like having a reticle made out of telephone posts. I took the eyepiece off and removed the reticle tube that housed the crosshairs(wires).
I once bought an old 15x or so Unertl that had some cosmetic issues and drooping crosshairs. I am probably a bit dated, but when Unertl repairs are thought of here, I seem to think of Parsons or Ackerman.
